Before any introduction, we check
  • You have separated from your partner
  • The house, super or savings are still to be divided
  • You are inside the time limit to make a claim
  • You live in Australia, anywhere except Western Australia

This is for you if

Property settlements are the part of separation most people put off. These are the situations our partner firms handle every week.

You were married or de facto

Both count. De facto couples have the same right to a property settlement, with a shorter time limit.

You own things together

A home, savings, super, a car, or a business. Even if one of you earned most of it, or it is in one name.

You have not agreed the split

Or you have agreed in principle but nothing is formal yet. An informal agreement can be undone later.

How it works

Three steps, and you are never rushed through any of them.

  1. 1

    Answer a few questions

About two minutes. Married or de facto, when you separated, what you own together, which state you are in. Your answers are saved as you go.

  2. 2

A short call with our team

Around ten minutes. We confirm a few details and find a consultation time that suits you. We never give legal advice on this call.

  3. 3

    Meet a partner family lawyer

A first consultation with a firm that works on property settlements every week, at a time you chose. What you do after that is up to you.

Why people use Settlement Sorted

Free to use

There is no charge to you for the questions, the call or the introduction. Partner firms pay us a fee, and your lawyer will tell you that too.

Property settlement focus

Every partner firm handles property settlements every week, as a core part of its practice.

Your details stay with you

What you tell us is shared with one partner firm only, with your consent, so it can check for conflicts and prepare for your consultation.

No pressure, ever

You are under no obligation after the call or the consultation. If the firm is not the right fit, tell us and we will find another.

What we ask of every partner firm

You only meet a firm that has agreed to all of this.

  • Practising family lawyers in your state (every state and territory except WA)
  • Property settlement is a core part of their work
  • They keep consultation times open for the people we introduce
  • They tell you about our fee before you engage them, as the conduct rules require
  • They agree to our standards: a first consultation is a conversation, with no pressure to sign

What happens on the call

After the questions, one of our team calls you at a time you pick. It takes about ten minutes.

We confirm your answers

So the firm has the right picture before you meet. The call is recorded so nothing gets lost in a handover.

We take your ex-partner's name

A law firm must check it has never acted for the other side before it can speak with you. Nothing else about them is needed.

We book your consultation

Into a time the firm has kept open. You get a confirmation and a reminder from us.

Questions people ask

If yours is not here, it will be answered on the call.

Is this really free?
Yes. You pay nothing to answer the questions, speak with our team or be introduced to a partner firm. The firm pays us a fee for the introduction, and it must tell you that before you engage it. What you agree with the firm after that is between you and them.
Do you give legal advice?
No. We are not lawyers and we do not advise on your situation. Our team only confirms your details and books the consultation. All legal advice comes from the partner firm.
What is a property settlement?
It is the formal division of everything a separated couple owns and owes: the home, savings, super, a business if there is one, and any debts. It applies whether you were married or de facto.
Is there a time limit?
Yes. In general a property claim must be started within 12 months of a divorce becoming final, or within 2 years of a de facto separation. After that, the court's permission is needed. A partner firm can tell you how this applies to you.
Who sees my answers?
Our team, and the one partner firm you are introduced to. We ask for your consent before anything is shared. If that firm cannot act for you, for example because it has already spoken to your former partner, we ask you before approaching another.
I live in Western Australia. Can you help?
Not yet. Western Australia has its own Family Court and its own rules for de facto couples, so our partner firms do not cover it. If you are in WA we will point you to public resources instead. Every other state and territory is covered.
I have already spoken to a lawyer. Can I still use this?
If you have already engaged a lawyer, this service is not for you, and we will say so rather than waste your time. If you have only had a chat and have not signed anything, you can go ahead.
